Located 10 km west of the city, Edinburgh Airport has 2 runways and 1 terminal. It is Scotland's busiest airport with 32 airlines flying 11.1 million passengers a year on 173 routes. The airport opened in 1916 and was used as a defense aerodrome during the First World War. When the war was over, the airport began to be used for commercial purposes. In 1947 a service between Edinburgh and London commenced and just a few years later, in 1952, the runway was extended to handle new, bigger aircraft.
During the 1980s, Dublin and Amsterdam were the only destinations served by EDI, but in subsequent years, flights to Germany and France commenced. To cope with the expansion and the growing number of passengers, new parking facilities were constructed. The airport continued to expand, a new air traffic control tower was built in 2005, and several extensions to the terminal have taken place to make it an influential airport.
Millions of passengers travel through Edinburgh Airport each year and to make sure that their experience is as comfortable and stress-free as possible. They offer a range of services and facilities if you are travelling with children, require special assistance, need business support or wish to relax over a last Scottish meal or grab drink while waiting for your flight..
