1. What is Black Friday?

Black Friday is the day after the American Thanksgiving. Black Friday unofficially heralds the Christmas shopping season and many brands offer special offers and discounts.

2. When is Black Friday?

Thanksgiving is celebrated annually on the 4th Thursday in November and Black Friday is the following Friday. This year it falls on November 29th.

Meanwhile Black Friday has been extended by more days like Cyber Monday (2nd November) and some companies offer whole discount weeks.

For those who like to plan ahead, here are the dates for the next 3 years:

  • Black Friday 2020 - 27 November
  • Black Friday 2021 - 26 November
  • Black Friday 2022 - 25 November

3. Where does Black Friday come from?

As already mentioned, Black Friday has its origins in the United States of America. The day between Thanksgiving and the weekend was used by many Americans as a bridge day. It was considered a particularly good opportunity to start the pre-Christmas shopping. Since then, many companies have taken this opportunity to boost the market and business with tempting offers and price reductions.

4. Why is it called Black Friday?

There are some theories about the origin of the name. It is known that in 1966 the Philadelphia police department officially spoke of Black Friday for the first time. The reason was probably the incredible crowds on the streets. The high rush to the shopping streets meant extraordinary traffic with traffic jams, accidents and sometimes even violence.

Black Friday is also associated with black numbers in accounting. Instead of red numbers, most shops generated particularly high profits on this day. These numbers are traditionally marked as black in the books.

Black Friday and Black Thursday should not be confused. Black Thursday was the 24th of October 1929, when there happened to be probably the biggest stock market crash in history. Due to the time difference, however, this stock market crash in Europe fell on a Friday and is therefore occasionally called Black Friday.

5. What is the difference between Black Friday and other sales?

In contrast to the classic sale, Black Friday gives you discounts at the beginning of the season. Traditionally you will find discounted products directly after the Christmas holidays. However, Black Friday allows you to get gifts and other purchases at low prices before the Christmas rush.

6. What is the difference between Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

These two events used to be markedly different in that shoppers would rush to the high streets for Black Friday deals, whereas Cyber Monday deals was the online world's answer. So, in the beginning, you'd hit the stores on Friday, then hit the cyberspace on Monday.

Black Friday has always tended to lean more towards tech products while Cyber Monday was more about lifestyle and a wider array of products, though this is no longer the case.

However, as so much of Black Friday is now about online shopping, the two events are often simply branded as Black Friday weekend.
