How do you read the graphs?
The dotted white line is the average rate for the route for the entire year. The blue bars represent the average ticket price in that month.
Langkawi (LGK)
Just off the west of Malaysia lies the region’s little paradise - the Langkawi archipelago. Like any picturesque island, Langkawi has its unique mosaic of beautiful sights and enthralling things to do, a welcome respite for the sleepy post-summer slumber that you haven’t quite shaken off yet.
Some holidays get you feeling on top of the world, and Langkawi gives you the chance to do that literally! The Sky Bridge, which stands at 700 metres above sea level, is a liberating or terrifying experience depending on your love for heights. Much closer to the ground are the numerous bays and beaches that offer a range of waterbound activities, and several island-hopping adventures for those looking to learn about the history of the islands. The nightlife here is as tranquil as the landscape - kick back with a beverage of choice and watch the sunset at one of the many bars and cocktail lounges that beckon.
Los Angeles (LAX)
The City of Angels needs no introduction - the notoriously expensive flights halfway across the world will be at their rare cheapest in June, a perfect time to plan the getaway of dreams. Expect amazing weather, mesmerizing sunsets, and endless cultural icons.
No first trip to Los Angeles will be complete without a trip to the Hollywood Sign and Walk of Fame - you may even get the chance to rub shoulders with the highest echelons at Rodeo Square as you round off Central LA! The other parts of LA are equally rich in culture - think metropolitan mosaics of the old and new, the most famous beaches in the world, and plenty of decadent food to round everything off (the original In-and-Out Burger, anyone?). Excited? Your time is now - grab your cheap tickets while they’re still here!
Kuching (KCH)
Our second entrant from Malaysia this month is the city of Kuching, on the east side in Sarawak. While not an island in its own right, half the city is bounded by the oceans, which has made it a central business, political, and tourism hub since its inception as a British colony.
The word Kuching means “cat” in Bahasa Malaysia, and the city’s obsession with cats does not end there. Pop by the Cat Museum and learn about these lovely critters across the ages - there’s even an exhibition section dedicated to Hello Kitty’s story! Those here for a dose of history will be glad to find cultural monuments from various races and religions, including the Kuching Mosque, Tua Pek Kong Chinese Temple, and the Old Courthouse. End the trip on a reflective note floating down the Sarawak River, which splits the city’s east and west sides.
Okinawa (OKA)
Keeping the focus on islands, we have Okinawa, the southern end of Japan. Its relative proximity to the Equator gives it a warmer climate compared to the rest of Japan - great news to those of us who can’t get enough of the sun!
Okinawa’s expansive marine life can be enjoyed no matter your penchant for water sports - the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium features manta rays and sharks, while divers can experience the underwater utopia up close off Cape Manza’s various spectacular diving spots. Entice your taste buds with a plethora of fresh waterbound and landbound cuisine, including strange fusions between the two, like goat sashimi. The views are as great as island horizons get, and the beaches are an oasis to enjoy your next unforgettable sunrise or sunset. So many things to try, and only one month to do it on the cheap - don’t sleep on these ticket sales!
Busan (PUS)
We featured Seoul in last month’s cheapest destinations feature, and its equally lovely cousin makes the list for the month of June! Busan is famous for its beaches, temples, and one-of-a-kind cuisine that cannot be found even in other parts of Korea. A staple in any trip to Korea, the cheap flights there in June only makes Busan even better.
The Gamcheon Cultural Village is the ubiquitous Instagram spot that travellers flock to when in Busan, but there’s plenty more to experience once you’ve trekked the slopes and taken your pictures. Check out Cimer Spa, a luxurious hot spring that overlooks the flawless Haeundae Beach, as well as Taejongdae, a bushland hike with stunning sea views where fresh native eats await. Urbanites need not fret as well - the Nampo district will satisfy the inner shopaholic in you, while the Gwangdaegyo Bridge will complete any city trip in a majestic skyline spectacle.
Reykjavik (REK)
Iceland’s capital is as culturally nuanced as its rather hard-to-pronounce name, but booking your next flight there will be far less complicated, and a whole lot cheaper! The land of the Vikings has modernized significantly since its times of old, and now offers architectural grandeur that blends perfectly with its colourful history.
On the top of Reykjavik’s list of architectural wonders in the Sun Voyager, a sculpture that harks back to Iceland’s past while conveying a desire to pursue the undiscovered. The Perlan, a revolving glass dome, houses some of Iceland’s best fine dining and cocktail options. The city centres are a sight to behold as well, and should you have your fill of the bustling metropolis, the Scandinavian country is home to one of the world’s greatest natural phenomena - the Northern Lights. A life-changing experience awaits, and it’s just one flight booking away.
Nadi (NAN)
Last but not least, we have Nadi, Fiji’s multicultural hub. Home to a recently revamped international airport, Fiji has reopened its doors to the world, and you’re invited to experience the little-known secret paradise.
Take a day trip around Viti Letu, Nadi’s main island, and mingle with the locals at various homestays scattered around the province. Beach bums can look forward to the Mamanuca Islands, one of Mother Nature’s best works of art, and various water activities for some adrenaline on the side. Dive headfirst into the native immersion and experience a local favorite in Sabeto Mud Pool, whose hot springs and mud baths are said to be the secret to the locals’ beauty and longevity. Don’t forget the local flavours - try the kava, Fiji’s national drink - it may be an acquired taste to some, but the locals love it, and will want to share the love! Flaming Wok (or Tu’s Place as it is known by some) offers large servings for cheap, and NASA Bar, once built for soldiers, offers a quaint nightlife experience to end off a great day of travel on a high.
The graphs above are based on bookings made in 2018 departing from Singapore, and travel trends will fluctuate year on year.
