Clark (CRK)
The Angeles City is a melting pot of colonial history that has passed through its shores, with American, British, Japanese and Spanish influences creating a beautiful mosaic of culture. You won’t be far off from the city’s urban attractions as well - SM City Clark and Aqua Planet offers the best in shopping and recreation.
If you’re here for something louder, you’re in luck - October is Clark’s festival primetime! Kicking off on the second Sunday of October is the La Naval Fiesta, in honor of the Spanish fleet of Navy ships that once protected the country from the Dutch. If you vibe nightlife, a must-see is Midnight Rodeo, an unassuming venue that will surprise with talented live music acts from evening till late.
Da Nang (DAD)
A rapidly rising tourist destination, Da Nang was just a small provincial town not long ago, and that rustic lustre is part of its draw. Its quick ascension in modernization however now makes it much more accessible, and it also happens to be the cheapest to head there in October!
Wander the streets of Hoi An Old Town and sample the best traditional food Vietnam has to offer, or take on Hai Van Pass on a rental car or bike and marvel at the spectacular views. For a quieter experience, make your way down to 7 Bridges Brewing Taproom, a young brewery that specializes in craft beers outside the mass-market scene. If you’re looking for something special to drink, this is the place to be!
Koh Samui
Yet another friendly island of Thailand makes an appearance on this list! Its close proximity makes it a shoo-in for any potential weekend trip, but there’s plenty more to explore if you’re planning to clear all your hard-earned leaves at one go.
Still breaking into a sweat because of Thailand’s notorious weather? Why not make it worth your while with a hike to the Namuang Waterfalls? Both waterfalls are accessible by foot within half an hour - if the views on the way up don’t enthrall you, the pool at the end certainly will! If you can’t get enough of the outdoors, a Jeep Safari tour will get you to the best of Koh Samui in no time.
Vancouver (YVR)
A distinct, but equally enjoyable change in scenery compared to sunny (and sadly hazy) Singapore can be found on a budget in Vancouver! Canada’s proliferating arts and cultural scene is in full swing here, and you can hit the ground running at Gastown, or even the seas on the way to Granville Island! Have your Sunday dapper on, because the hipster crowd is watching!
Canada’s beautiful landscapes cannot be missed as well - take a trek down to Lynn Canyon and its range of hidden watering holes and waterfalls, or a leisurely stroll through the Van Dusen Botanical Gardens. Whether your muse is in fashion or fauna, Vancouver will inspire to no end.
Qingdao (TAO)
Who says you can’t get cool weather right here in Asia? The roaring suns take a break in Qingdao this October, along with the prices - a perfect time to capitalize! A port city of skyscrapers flanking the Yellow Sea, the city’s bathing beaches are a respite to beach bums seeking a change, while shopaholics will be drawn into the street offerings at Pichai Yuan.
You’ve probably seen Qingdao’s signature Tsingtao Beer being served in local kopitiams or bars back home - take a closer look at how the icon came to be in the still-functional Tsingtao Beer Museum. The beer-crazy city also serves beer in a familiar way - in a plastic bag, reminiscent of our kopi-O packets, but bigger! Add that novelty to a $3 price tag per pint, and any beer enthusiast will be sold.
Honolulu (HNL)
The beaches of Hawaii need no introduction, but if you need an excuse to be there, this month is the best one you can get! The autumn months are a precedent for some of the biggest waves Hawaii has to offer - witness the best surfers in action and try your hand at a killer wave yourself! Waikiki Beach is great for beginners, while pipes in the North Shore should only be attempted by the most seasoned and daring adrenaline junkies out there!
Honolulu is also a gateway to several other natural wonders, and volcanoes like Maunakea and Kilauea are prime places for hikes, night or day! Witness the might of Mother Nature up close, and cool off after with a classic shaved ice in Honolulu’s resident dessert shops.
Kathmandu (KTM)
The capital city of Nepal is steeped in heritage, and the majestic city reflects their prominence in world culture today. The Ason and Mangal Bazaars are decked with Nepalese wares, and temples crafted with traditional artisan precision add sparkle to the sandy streets. Despite the nation’s Hindu majority, several other religions peacefully coexist - a perfect place to witness Buddhism simplicity and beauty can be found in the Boudhanath Stupa, a must-see for religious history buffs.
Nearby, the city of Bhaktapur more than lives up to its UNESCO heritage site status. A short drive away (provided you get lucky with traffic), the city is also home to Durbar Square, one of three royal squares in Nepal and also the most spiritually significant.
