San Francisco (SFO)
The Golden Gate Bridge you’ve seen so many times in the movies is just one flight away, and this flight doesn’t get any cheaper than during the month of September. Take a photo or a walk at the iconic suspension bridge, before heading over to Fisherman’s Wharf for a glimpse at the area’s barking residents. Bring the trip full circle with a satisfying Mission-style burrito, a tortilla filled to the brim with rice, meat, beans, and salsa!
Kota Kinabalu (BKI)
For somewhere a little closer to home, Kota Kinabalu offers equal parts adventure and artisanship. Brave the night at Mount Kinabalu to catch the light rays of dawn and fight the white water rapids at Padas River, or explore the indegenous Sabah culture at Monsopiad Cultural Village and visit the various mosques and museums! There’s much to do, and the short distance there and back means you’ll have some time back home to recuperate after the fun.
Fukuoka (FUK)
Fukuoka is Kyushu’s most populated city, and its attractions draw tourists numbering many times that. Like many of its neighbouring provinces, the city is chock-full of stunning sights to witness, including the Fukuoka Castle and the Kyushu National Museum, the first new national museum in Japan for over a century! A trip to Fukuoka cannot be complete without a trip to Nakasu, a strip of land between two rivers. What used to be an exclusively red-light district is now a bustling nightlife destination with scores of yatai, or street food vendors serving up scrumptious Japanese treats.
Chengdu (CTU)
Are you a fan of mala? You’ll be in spice heaven at Chengdu, home to the Sichuan peppercorn and the first purveyors of Sichuan cuisine! Kick your day off with a guided tour to Leshan, which houses a 71-foot tall giant Buddha carved out of the mountain’s face. Replenish your hard-spent calories with a traditional mala hotpot lunch before working it all off trekking through the urban retail jungle that is Chunxi Road Market, a six-storey shopping bonanza where prices are always negotiable, and a battle of wits! Chengdu is also home to the iconic panda, and you’ll get to check out their lazy antics over at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
Munich (MUC)
A surprise entrant on the list is Munich, the city of Oktoberfest! Despite its name, the world’s biggest beer festival kicks off at the end of September, and locals and international revellers gather to witness a spectacular opening ceremony that features a traditional costume parade, horse-drawn barrel carriages, and the opening of the festival’s first barrel by the Mayor of Munich. Not a beer person? Soak up the good vibes another way at Marienplatz, the city’s cultural square, or be embraced by Bavarian thunder at the Allianz Arena, home of the famous FC Bayern Munich.
Berlin (TXL)
The capital of Germany is another place to plan towards this September! Steeped in culture and heritage, the city lets none of that age slip with an equally heady supply of contemporary offerings. Immerse yourself in the highlights and lowlights of world history at the Berlin Wall, Brandenburg Gate, and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. Afterwards, wander the streets of Alexanderplatz where the rising stars of street performance busk and celebrate, before tucking into a sinful serving of pork knuckle and mash.
Copenhagen (CPH)
At number seven is Lonely Planet’s best city to visit in 2019 - Copenhagen! The capital of Denmark and also the country’s most populous city, its attractions leave travellers spellbound as the timeless beauty of Nyhavn River draws a sharp contrast with Copenhagen’s everchanging contemporary architecture. Local efforts have given areas like Jægersborggade a new lease of life, while the municipal authorities have stepped up as well, with the new City Ring Metro line due for an official opening in September. Be one of the first to travel the city with ease, and save on your flight in the process!
