5 Unique Reasons to Book a Trip to Australia's Northern Territory
Australia’s Northern Territory is a mere 4 hours 40 minutes flight from Singapore to
Darwin, the territory's capital. From here you can set foot into the outback or simply enjoy the pleasures of this tropical Northern city. We’ve put together some unique reasons why we love Australia’s NT and why you should jump on our deal and book your trip now!
#1 The food
Ok, we know that’s an open statement with Singaporeans’ being swayed by almost any food queue (maybe even without knowing what to expect), but we promise you some unique Aussie experiences. To get a taste head to the Mindil Beach Markets in Darwin every Thursday (5-10pm) and Sunday (4-9pm) from the last Thursday in April to The last Thursday in October to sample local fare such as crocodile or buffalo burgers or you can stay Asian and test out Darwin’s laksa offering. With over 60 stalls to choose from take your choice and set up camp to watch some of the performance artists around the market entertaining from acoustic music to acrobatics and fire breathing. Don’t get carried away and miss the epic show of the sun setting over the beach. Other favourite spots to check out are Parap, Nightcliff and Raprid Creek markets for local fare.
#2 The Music
The Darwin festival should be something every culture vulture should tick off their lists. Hosted in the centre of Darwin from 10-27 August 2017 this annual festival brings performers from all over Australia as well as some international artists to the cities stage. Tickets are on sale now with the full program being released on 21st June. With Opera Australia taking on Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro you are in for a treat. Watch out for Frank Yamma, a festival regular, CheapTickets.sg caught him at last year's show and were mesmerised by his vocal talent. With performances like this under the twinkling fairy light sky under the warm evening sky, what more could you want in a trip down under?
#3 The Crocs
The local residents are iconic to the region. Whether you want to get up close and personal with the crocs in a perspex cave dive at Crocosaurus Cove in Darwin city centre or watch them jump for their lunch at on a cruise down the Adelaide River, you are certain to get a close encounter if you want to. Be sure to listen to the crew on your boat and don’t be tempted to hang your arms out of the boat, even to get a better picture, the crocs are wild!
#4 The Races
The locals take their eventing very seriously, and in a slightly unusual way. 2 events to put in your diary not to miss on your trip to the NT are:
#1 The Camel Cup: July 15th 2017
This annual event started in 1970 originated on a bet between friends and has evolved into a festival as skilled riders race moody camels along the dusty outback tracks in Alice Springs
#2 Henley- On-Todd Regatta
Held annually on the last Sunday in August the dry riverbed of the the Todd River gets flooded with revelers in an annual rowing and sailing event with a difference. Witness flintstone style boats and vikings shooting water cannons. This is no Oxford- Cambridge boat race on the Thames but something far more extraordinary, having raised well over $1 million for local, national and international humanitarian projects through the carnival.
#5 The Light
Looking for that perfect Insta worthy light spot? Look no further than The Field of Light Spectacular in Uluru. This once in a lifetime experience of more than 50,000 solar lit bulbs scattered in the desert under Australia’s iconic rock has been extended until 31st March 2018. If you've been looking for a timely reason to make a trip there in the next 10 months, this should be it.
