Westerly winds called “chinooks” can drastically change the temperature by as much as 15°C, which is a little respite from an otherwise very cold atmosphere. There is very little rainfall year round, with the most rain occurring in the summer months, so it may be worth bringing a raincoat in case you are caught in a shower. During the winter months, expect average temperatures of around -2°C, and the summer months climb to 23°C.
Currency Calgary uses the Canadian dollar, which is different from the US dollar. It is worth changing money in advance as, while some establishments will take USD, it is charged at a premium rate. Funds can be exchanged at banks, credit unions and ATMs. Restaurants and retailers will also accept credit and debit card payments.
