It is thought that Wellington was first discovered by the Polynesian explorer Kupe, in 950 AD. In 1773, Captain Cook arrived and the area was mapped and named Port Nicholson by Captain Herd in 1826. In 1840, The New Zealand Company renamed the settlement Wellington, in honour of the Duke of the same name. The city's glorious harbour and excellent location between North and South Island helped it to grow quickly and it became capital of the country in 1865. The history of the city is intertwined with huge earthquakes, one of which, in 1855, raised the land from the bay on which the modern city is built.
Wellington has lots to do for both lovers of the outdoors and those who prefer a more sedate city break. Most attractions are within easy reach and the public transport network is excellent. Build your itinerary from some of these highlights.
