You can find 'carnaval' parades all over Portugal, with Lisbon having a spectacular celebration. Carnaval dates back to when people held huge feasts to eat up all the meat that was forbidden for consumption during Lent. Traditionally, carnaval begins on the last Friday before Lent and ends on Shrove Tuesday.
During this festival the air is filled with the smell of sardines grilling on churrascos outside houses and restaurants. It celebrates the story of how a fish rose out of the sea to listen to the 13th-century Saint Anthony when locals wouldn't.
For 10 days, restaurants and chefs come together to make world renowned food. There are cooking sessions, cooking classes, wine pairing contests and more.
The EXD Biennale presents original concepts in a renovated programme. If you are into design and happen to be going to Lisbon from October to November be sure to take a look at the EXD Biennale.
